Toronto-based band God Made me Funky have been making waves across the national music scene for over a decade. Their upbeat blend of rock, funk, rap and old-school soul have won them legions of fans and critical accolades.

Their latest release, "WELCOME TO NEWFUNKTONIA", channels the sounds of the past, with whiffs of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and of course, Parliament Funkadelic. At the same time, the album is full of contemporary sounds, offering a hard-edged rock-rap sound exemplified on the album's lead-off single, "On The Line (Lay It)", a re-working of the Triumph classic "Lay It On The Line."
Lucid Media had the chance to chat with God Made Me Funky's PHATT al before they opened the 2009 edition of the Beaches International Jazz Fest.
He talks about the importance of putting ego aside, the challenges of songwriting, and just how to get to Nufunktonia.
