Named after the multi-headed beast of Greek mythology, Anton Piatigorsky's Eternal Hydra is a challenging, rewarding, complex piece of theatre. It revolves around the premise of a fictional novel -what the characters insist may be the greatest book ever written, but never read: Eternal Hydra, by the Irish writer Gordias Carbuncle. Piatigorsky weaves notions of authorship, collaboration, and authenticity into a fascinating detective-style tale, with doses of romance, tragedy, and history.
The play started out as a one-act work in 2002, and was expanded into a full-length workshop by the award-winning Crow's Theatre Company in 2007. It received its full production at Toronto's Buddies in Bad Times theatre in Spring 2009, and is part of this year's Magnetic North Theatre Festival.
Lucid Media recently had the chance to sit down with two of the leads from Eternal Hydra, David Ferry and Liisa Repo-Martell, to discuss the play and its wider ramifications.
