Most people know Doubt from the film version starring Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman. However, it started out as a play, written by award-winning playwright John Patrick Shanley.
The play is set in a school in the Bronx in 1964; Sister Aloysius has suspicions that the new priest, Father Flynn, has less than honourable intentions in his attempts to help a new black student fit in. Shanley's explores the importance of doubt within society, using the context of the battle of wills between the two figures.
The Canadian Stage Company is currently producing Doubt at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts. Lucid Media recently had the chance to sit down with the show's director, Marti Maraden, and its star, Seana McKenna, to talk about Shanley's work and the importance of having doubts.
