Get ready to rock with the first version of Guitar Hero on a Nintendo System. If you’ve ever played a Guitar Hero game then you know the drill. Different Colored buttons go by across the screen. You must match the on screen button with the correct colored fret (Green, Red, Yellow, Blue, and Orange) on the guitar, while strumming with a black bar on the bottom. The more notes you hit the higher your score, and multiplier bonus. If you hit a set of notes that have a star as a border you will get star power. Activating star power doubles whatever your current multiplier bonus is.
There are nice motion control things like tilting the guitar up to activate star power. Other Wii features include things like the internal speaker on the Wii Remote being used to emit a sound effect when incorrect notes are hit and the Wii Remote's rumble feature is used when Star Power mode is on.
Another great thing is that you can jump right into rocking with quick play, or start a career to unlock new songs. Unlike the previous career modes, this one moves along with nice quick animations instead of a slow moving van. The coolest new feature however definetly has to be the guitar battles. Instead of star power you use weapons. The list includes double notes, extra difficulty, broken strings, and more sweet things that will ruin the reputation of whoever your facing. You win if they fail the song. The coolest part though is you'll be battling Tom Morello, Slash, and even the devil himself. However these are the only guitar battles throughout all of career mode. It could’ve definetly used more, like one against Ozzy Osbourne or something.
After playing through career mode awhile and getting to the last few sections you will cringe at the difficulty of the songs. I beat the game on easy and medium, but am still working on career mode at hard and expert. You will have to resort to practicing and memorizing notes just to get through. Overall though the game moves at a pretty fast pace and is a great “pick up and play” game.
If you’ve ever played the prequels then you know that GH3 finally looks as great as it plays unlike the other two. Though GH3 is fun alone it is best enjoyed with a friend. Whether they are in the room playing with you or online, it makes it more fun. Even if your just playing against random people, it’s nice to know that you rock… or suck. Whichever one applies to you. The new battle feature is also available in multi-player.
The song list includes songs that even your parents will know. Ranging from “Slow Ride” to “Paint it Black” to “Anarchy in the U.K.”. My favorite is “Paint It Black” mainly because it’s fun and easy. If you get tired of playing those songs, there is a craplode of purchasable content. Including new songs, characters, skins, outfits, styles and more. I am dissapointed though that down-loadable content will not be available right away. Hopefully they will add this feature later on.
Overview:
With great graphics and game-play you’d be foolish to miss out on this game. That’s all I can really say. The only thing you can really complain about is the difficulty, and lack of guitar battles in career mode. Don’t let the steep $90 dollar price tag get to you. This game ROCKS!!!!
