If you’re looking for a freakishly strange, but thrilling musical, you just found the perfect one. Stephen Sondeim’s musical thriller Sweeny Todd has been adapted and directed by Tim Burton and is now available on DVD. This thriller brought many talents together such as the likes of John Logan who wrote the screenplay, and of course, Christopher Bond, Sondeim, and Hugh Wheeler who created the brilliant and exciting music for this masterpiece. This movie stars Johnny Depp as the ex-convict Sweeny Todd, Helena Bonham Carter as his accomplice and partner in crime Mrs. Nelly Lovett, Sasha Baron Cohen as Todd’s former apprentice Adolfo Pirelli, Alan Rickman as the man who stole Todd’s wife and daughter from him, Judge Turpin, and last but not least, Timothy Spall as Beadle Bamford, Turpin’s number one man.
Wrongfully imprisoned for years, with only the horrid memory of his wife and daughter being basically stolen from him as he is taken away by Judge Turpin’s men, their fate much like his, Todd, who some know as Benjamin Barker, only has revenge in his heart when he is released from prison and returns to London. When he returns to his hometown he meets Mrs. Lovett of Mrs. Lovett’s Pie’s, a pie shop where she sells “the worst pies in London,” as she states. Mrs. Lovett, who falls in love with Todd, assists him in opening up a barber shop above her Pie Shop. But this isn’t any ordinary barber shop, no one who walks in, walks out! All Todd wants is revenge with the one who stole his true love from him. Todd and Lovett together turn the united businesses into hits, attracting customers from all over. After awhile, one by one, people start catching on to the horrible demise and he is labelled as the “Demon Barber of Fleet Street” by the fearful neighbours. Ignoring the bashing and the comments, Todd continues on his murder frenzy with the assistance of his beautiful friend and accomplice, Mrs. Lovett, who has a pie shop. Again with a twist, her pies are filled with a most unpleasant ingredient, can you guess?
