Scream-o metal is easy, trying to use it to make something with a little more mainstream appeal is hard. I must confess that i wasn't entirely sure what I was going to get with this album when I put it on, but what I did get was something of a surprise to me. There are some excellent guitars solos on this album as well as cool drumbeats. Vocalist Curtis Shamlin contorts his voice in numerous different ways throughout the album, he goes from deep growl to melodic and back to growl again, frequently on the same song.
I eventually had to concede that Prey For Murder wasn't really scream-o in the way I've come to know it, but it's used as a portal through which Speakers of the Dead give us some much more interesting music. Would I have picked this up at a record store if it wasn't already assigned to me to review? Probably not, but I'm glad I got the chance to hear this; it restores my faith in metal as a music form that can still be innovative. The lyrics make you want to give the songwriters an anti-depressive of course, but at least the music the words are put is interesting.
