Using Death Metal as a template, Akercocke takes it several steps further by adding elements of gothic and progressive rock into the mix. It may start off hard, and every now and then the band reminds you that they are a Death Metal outfit, but this a band that clearly goes it's own way. One minute the guitar is accompanying the low-key vocals, but the next minute the riffs are blazing as the solo starts. Given feels previously expressed for this type of music it may come as a shock to hear me say that I rather enjoyed this album. While the occasions were the Death part of the Metal had me slouch down n my chair, there were frequent rest bits where I could appreciate the artistry here.
