First things first: these are two separate bands, but you probably already knew that. First up is Asteroid, and I get the impression that this band misses the good old days of 70s stadium rock and roll. It's a feeling they recreate simply enough, as their first song "Supernova" begins with a three and a half minute instrumental before the lyrics burst forth. It's followed by "Anagram", which sometimes sounds as if it's sampling the 60s Turtles song "So Happy Together" with a hair-rock spin. Rounding off the Asteroids' set is the rock opera sounding "The Big Trip Beyond", a tune that would have not been uncomfortable sitting between Pink Floyd and the Rock Horror soundtrack on a record store shelf in 1977. Weird.
The second half of the disc belongs to Blowback, which could have ended up being an unfortunate commentary on the band's musical ability. As opposed to their colleagues in Asteroids, Blowback seeks a more contemporary sound, namely the 80s. There music also leans to the heavier side of the rock sound spectrum; hard rocking, but with flair and style. Black Sabbath is the obvious influence in Blowback, but chances are they've borrowed from just about every big name, hard rock concert band from the late 70s and early 80s. All things being equal, I think Asteroids succeeds just a little bit better than Blowback in recalling their rock 'n' roll past, but mostly they just rock.
