From the second that you hit “play” on Crystal Brandt's third album Voter, you immediately hear the difference between Brandt and some her more famous contemporaries. That difference: the voice. It's real, earthy and emotional. There's been no digital tricks or slight of hand in the mixing. Just Brandt, her voice, and her six-string (or piano as the case may be). She first off reminded me of Lucinda Williams, or maybe Fiona Apple for you kids; the melody sets the stage and the voice takes you the rest of the way. The set-up is simple, but the sound is deep. I was often caught pausing over your keyboard and letting it lull me into a trance-like state. Casey Brandt makes what she does look easy, but as we know appearances can be deceiving.
