Putting Ancestry In Progress into my CD player I noticed that the art on the disc itself made it look like an old fashioned LP record, which already made Zap Mama's fifth album a keeper in my books. Fortunately, the music on said album is well worth keeping in and of itself. The ensemble that makes up Zap Mama, led by Belgian musician Marie Daulne, creates a wonderful soul/funk/hip-hop sound that will automatically make you recall Erykah Badu and The Roots. Fitting then that only do all three of those acts share a common local, Philadelphia PA, but that they also appear as guest stars on the album along with Common and Talib Kweli. Zap Mama and friends create a laid back sound that is pure enjoyment form beginning to end.
