A lot new music lately has been very influenced by 80s new wave outfits like Duran Duran and Depeche Mode. Of course those bands have made comebacks of their own in the last couple of years, but so far no newer band has come close to capturing that aesthetic. Enter: Backlash. (Hope their not jinxing themselves with that band name.) The music on Heliotrope is like new wave evolved; more electronic beats and greater production with the addition of voice distortions as well as literal bells and whistles. Normally, I'm not a fan when a band moves so far away from the real, but it works for Backlash and it works for me.
