Phil McMurtry has got guts. He has enough confidence in his work and enough belief in himself to spread his music to an audience, and for this I applaud him. The album is a great effort and one driven by this mans undeniable passion for his music it may, however not please everyone.
"Are We Nearly There Yet?" is a completely self compiled effort. Phil produced, wrote, arranged, and performed all 12 tracks on his album; Phil McMurtry hails from the United Kingdom and runs his own studio: Mid Earth Studio. He is a seasoned musician with a classical background and an unquenchable love for rock and classical music. Each song on the album is either enhanced by electronic variations, or played by a metallic sounding acoustic guitar. On all songs Phil McMurtry stretches his vocal chords for all their worth; navigating carefully through lyrics such as "It's Alushia, where fantasy and time move on/ It's Alushia, where Kings and Queens have been gone" on "Alushia", and "I want your point of view. As I end the CD moments such as the back up singing on "Energy" and the arrangements on the tracks stick through.
Phil McMurty recordings have a fresh although niavie approach while still retaining a familiar sound. He plays a variety of instruments, from bass guitars, to acoustic guitars, to electronic synthesizers and drums. If I have something negative to say it is that he has something to say, and maybe this album doesn't go far enough in bringing that out. On his next albumn It would be nice to hear him try to invent musically and lyrically; to begin from scratch.
