Josh Ritter doesn't look old enough to remember the best of folk rock favourites like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Simon & Garfunkel, but his third album The Animal Years channels these artists, and channels them well. This is a true album from start to finish, not merely a collection of radio-ready singles and other songs. That's not to say that some tunes standout more than others; the track "Wolves" flies by like a good, old-fashioned, foot-stomping ballad. Speaking of ballads, the marathon "Thin Blue Flame" is exquisite in its simplicity: a man, his guitar and his poetic waxing. Well worth a listen for anyone looking for a vintage sound in a new artist.
