When I popped this disc into my machine I didn’t know my Sephardic from my September. Sephardic Jews originally came from Spain, but the term’s been expanded over the years to include a Jew of Arab descent. You may not understand what singer Gerard Edery is saying but you can easily feel in your bones that this is spiritual music; you don’t even have to know that the lyrics are ripped from sacred texts. The music is an odd mix: you get the usual instruments like guitar, drum, and electric bass, but worked into the sound mix there is also a saz and an oud (both from the lute family) and an honest-to-God rabbi singing soprano. A fascinating work definitely off the beaten aisle in the music store.
