A good EP is like a good short story or film: you have to say a whole lot and get it understood with a limited amount of space. Timothy Bailey & The Humans appropriately named Listen! Listen! shows a great deal of promise for this outfit as they lay out six brilliant examples of how wonderfully listenable a pop, rock, folk, country mix is. Lead singer Timothy Bailey has a voice that right off made me wonder what it reminded me of. The answer: Barenaked Ladies vocalist and guitarist Ed Robinson; hard praise to give and hard praise to live up to .
“Honey & Lie” could almost have been a cut off Gordon if it was 13 years ago; the simple and rich acoustic sound seems to be the band’s flavour of choice as the music played probably easily translates to a stage show. “Pretty Lights” dipped into some of that country flavour, but the tone set in the first song remains the same, just a little more up tempo and with an organ. Bailey and the gang reel it in with “Moonstones” and “Colorado Girl” and keep the music slow and dulcet through to the final track: a cover of Lucinda Williams’ “Sweet Old World”. An excellent effort to be sure, a pure harmonic album that just plays good music well.
