Okay, so when I was doing research on this band I came across a web page that had a black and white picture of a guy in some kind of Kabuki mask that looked as if it were from the Insane Clown Posse collection--a little freaky to say the least. I was suddenly rather afraid to but the disc in the CD player, but that’s fine; I just used the fear. The first track was a nice, little three-minute instrumental number, but that was followed by song that sounded like lead vocals were being performed by Gollum from Lord of the Rings; I’m pretty sure “My Precious” were actual song lyrics. After eleven minutes of Gollum and electronic static being passed off for background music, the album seemed to finally be getting going.
Look at the song list below and tell me you don’t smell pretension coming from a mile away. Surprisingly, this band is from Australia and not Germany or eastern Europe; at least there they know how to make black metal really shine, so to speak. Surprising still is the fact that all but five of these songs are from a 1997 demo that I guess the band felt needed to be spread around some more. That’s cool, I get it; too bad that there just ain’t more here than pops and clicks and creepy vocalizations. Production wise, it is excellent and there are some interesting mixes and sound, but a sit-down-and-listen album this is not. I will however hang on to it to add atmosphere to my front stoop on Halloween night. This will creep them out good.
