You may think that Athena Reich is your everyday punk-rocking chick, but you should know by now to never judge a book by its cover. Reich has a multi-octave voice and her music is multi-faceted and multi-layered. She takes from several genres like punk, ska, and pop, but then there are tunes like “The Ballad of Chicken Shower” that sound straight off of Broadway or “Jesse”, which could almost be mistaken for 60s folk. The amazing thing is how these different forms slide so easily into one another, often a song starts out with a certain tone only to spin off in unexpected ways. Also included on the disc is concert pianist Francine Kay and Jazz musicians John Fraboni and Jean Cyr; who further amplify Reich’s dedication to cornering every possible sound on a single album.
