Bite Your Tongue, the latest work from New York based band The Sex Slaves, has now hit the shelves. This bands live performances are known as an “experience” for all who attend. They keep the intensity high throughout their show and are said to “radiate energy” with each song. Their sets continually pump up the audience, keeping them wanting more. The real question is: Does this energy translate the same onto their latest album?
The answer to that is a flat out YES. These guys' recorded format still manages to maintain the sheer energy that makes their live experience such an exhibition. The opening song, “We’re Going Out Tonight” sets the tone for the rest of the album. Sex, Booze and Rock is what this album is all about; putting the listener into the mood to do nothing but party. If you are looking for deep meaningful lyrics that are based around the problems of the world and how rock can fix them; you won’t find them here. This music is, for the most part, power filled beats about the high life of rock & roll. Such songs as “See You Naked” or “All Night Long” are self explanatory about the content and theme of the songs.
The one issue with this album lies in the same places as its strengths. This is a raw sounding punk album. It has some amazing ripping guitar work which may not be for everyone. Some people may find that many of the songs have a similar theme or sound, and if you are not a fan of the punk genre you also may find they are a bit rough around the edges, vocally. They may sound unpolished when compared too many modern "clean cut, pop punk” bands. The Sex Slaves definitely capture the hardcore punk rock sound extremely well with the yelling of their lyrics against the establishment forcing people to get up and move.
Now, you may all be wondering: is an album is something you should run out and pick up? Well I’ll say this much, if you’re the person who likes his music to have deep philosophical meaning, or you are not a fan of punk then; No. But, if you like raw punk sounding music and want something to party to, this album is definitely worth it. These guys have successfully captured a great sound on Bite Your Tongue and I personally am looking forward to hearing more of them.
