In The Wake Of Separation is an album that's going to open up eyes of listeners in the world of extreme metal. Thine Eyes Bleed have risen the bar by not only creating a sonically crushing piece of work, but also one that is intelligent, emotionally charged and next to impossible to categorize musically.
First off, the production job is nothing short of spectacular. Many albums have been made which have suffered from muddy, sub-par knob jobs, but In The Wake Of Separation is definitely not one of them. The bands sound is crystal clear and every instrument has plenty of room to breathe, showing off the wide array of talent of the band has to offer.
The drumming and rhythm section are very solid; both heavy-handed and intricate. This adds to intensify each song rather than just being present to hold down the beat. The guitars are pummeling and technical riffs abound, as well as some moments of melodic bliss. The solos are also a highlight, having an odd, oblique quality to them and not sounding like they are treading old ground. The most impressive aspect of this album is the vocals and lyrics. Justin Wolfe's voice sounds like it's being shredded beyond its limits, yet the words are still enunciated clearly, creating that much more raw emotion to the already intensely personal and relatable lyrics. Solid song structures also help in making In The Wake Of Separation an appealing listen.
Though the album is a remarkable beast from start to finish, there are a few tracks that stick out. Cold Victim, with its eerie feedback intro slamming straight into sheer uncompromising heaviness and catch vocal hooks. The mix of clean and screamed vocals in Live To Die are just plain awesome and create a dense, dark, emotional atmosphere as well as highlight the impressive vocal range Justin has. Also, Consequence Unknown's riffing and solo are truly incredible.
Thine Eyes Bleed have created a solid, crushing debut for The End that should prove them to be a valuable addition to the label's already impressive and eclectic roster. Look for In The Wake Of Separation on shelves June 21st.
