Thor has been in the entertainment industry for over 3 decades now and has done pretty much everything. He's been a celebrated bodybuilder (former Mr. Canada & Mr. USA), Glam/Power metal Icon, comic book hero, actor and more. Music has been his main focus throughout the years though, and Thor Against the World is his newest offering to his rabid fans and those who need a quick fix of good old-fashioned glam metal/hard rock.
The album starts off with the straight ahead metal boogie of the title track, a piece that is the perfect example of what Thor does best. The man knows how to write huge anthemic choruses that easily pump up his audience. Creature Feature also shows this strength off as well and gives a little insight into what it is that drives him to make his music/movies etc.
The next two songs slow things down a bit and show off a different aspect of Thor's musical repertoire. Serpents Kiss is a great mid-tempo scorcher that has bite to it (no pun intended). Glimmer is the first weak song and is also apparently the single off the album. It comes off as a tribute to good ol' rock 'n' roll but it falls flat and the sax solo is just plain unnecessary. Gonna Have A Hard Time, Hard To Cry & Long Time are all standard hard rockers that bring the album back up to it's anthemic greatness after the weak Glimmer. Megaton Man is a personal fave as it is hard rockin', fun and very tongue-in-cheek.Turn To Blue is another slower song and, like Glimmer, it falls short and hinders the flow of the album. In true form though, he ends the album with the almost power metal grandeur of The Coming Of Thor and finishes the album on a high note.
Thor Against The World isn't for everyone though. If you aren't into music that is campy, tongue-in-cheek and fun, then this will not be your thing. But if you want to have fun and become a part of Thor's larger than life superhero persona, then this is a must have. The music is top notch (especially Frank Meyers guitar solos) and the album shows that Thor isn't letting up at all, even after three decades of hard rock theatrics. The cd also contains the promo video for Glimmer, which has guest appearances by Lou Diamond Philips and Jason Priestley (cuts from the movie Murder At the Presidio, with which Thor appears in apparently).
If you see that Thor is coming to your town, check him out. His live show is over the top and he makes sure everyone is having as much fun as he is. His ability to bend an iron bar with his teeth is worth the price of admission alone. Seriously.
