Originally self-released as The Black EP, the Mooney Suzuki have padded things out with the introduction of five new tracks with this extended cut. Described as neo-glam meets garage rock, this band has a hard edge and a frantic feel; if you liked Jack Black’s School of Rock, you’ll like this band because it was them who wrote the original songs performed in that movie. A definite punk aesthetic can also be heard on the older half of the record, but things seem to lighten up a little bit at the beginning of track seven, “Right on By”, which is the first song from the new stuff. These two halves give the EP a bizarre kind of flip-side feel, where you get two portions of music that are obviously from the same band but are about as different as night and day—not that I’m complaining, mind you; after all, good music is good music no matter what.
