I sometimes get concerned when I hear a band’s music described as difficult to pigeonhole, for even in the most eclectic sound there is some unifying theme or feeling to the sound. Such is the case with Ween, who have just released Shinola Vol. 1, the latest in a long line of albums. Hopefully, this implies that there’s a Vol. 2 coming because it’s hard not to enjoy what’s here. Catchy hooks and harmonic instrumentation along with the Brothers Rivers' Cuomo-inspired vocals make this some of the most easily listenable music you can find in today’s crowded marketplace. Courting a variety of genres and melodies, Ween stays fresh with every song, and while I can’t say they’re pigeonholed, they are definitely distinctive.
