When you call yourself Kinky…well, I wasn’t expecting this. Kinky is an electro-pop outfit from Malibu, Reina is their third album, and what it offers is some very inventive music that manages a vibrant acoustic base amplified by solid production values that take the sound up a notch. Seemingly never satisfied to lay off funky beats for even a second, the music of Kinky comes to a whole other place by benefit of the band’s latino heritage as Spanish beats and Spanish lyrics are added to the mix of New Wave by way of Daft Punk vibe. The five-piece outfit is joined by legendary Men at Work–vocalist Colin Hay for the gem above all others entitled “Monday Killer”; Hay’s mellow tones perfectly complement the band’s energy.
