The thing about alternative is that it should actually provide an alternative to the music out getting regular airplay. Well, Gosling certainly markets themselves as alternative, but frankly their music could be mistaken as being that from another, equally competent band. Thus we find ourselves with a bit of a conundrum with Gosling’s sound; the music is better than competent; in fact, it’s very well done technically, but in a taste test of random listeners, I’d defy them to tell the difference between this band and the latest “hitmaker” being spun on high school iPods. Gosling has the potential as they really seem to know the rock-pop formula by going just hard enough for a wide audience.
