It would seem that Gerard Edery is out to prove just how versatile a musician he can be. In past recordings, whether he’s solo, working with his ensemble, or working with other artists, Edery sticks to the mixed heritage music of the Sephardic. Okay sure, he also sometimes does romantic Spanish, but that can almost be considered part of the overall area of emphasis in music he’s dedicated his career to. In Amid the Jasmine, Edery and the ensemble go completely pluralistic, combining music in Ladino, Spanish, Arabic, and Hebrew from the Sephardic and Middle Eastern traditions and then mixing in some new works of his own in English. At the centre is the group’s usual commitment to musical excellence, solid production values, and a clear love of the music and playing the music.
