I think in a day and age where the actual, physical production of music is rather simple to perform, the actual mechanics of forming a band and finding the right sound are as difficult as ever. Such was the case with Vancouver-based Shoofly, who have just released this five-song EP made available at their shows and on their website. Not to be perfectly blunt, but my first impression was uninspired; it just sounded a bit too much like a lot of other bands that are either trying to make a name for themselves or are otherwise trying to maintain it. A funny thing happened with “On My Side” though, as Shoofly rolled out a king of post-alternative tint on Blue Rodeo-style blues. On “Don’t Tell Me”, it almost seemed as if Shoofly was offering a west-coast counterpoint to Great Big Sea and then “Tell Me” was a kind of melodic rock jam complementary to similar types of songs done by Green Day. Lead singer Bryan Cassidy almost seems to be mimicking Billie Joe Armstrong in some of his delivery. If there’s criticism to be made, it’s that Shoofly sounds like too many things and needs a more cohesive sound. Still though, they are solid musicians who deserve a bright future with nation-wide appeal.
