I know what you’re thinking: just what we need, another Canadian alternative rock band. Hold on there, don’t be so quick to judge, because Boswalos is definitely worth a listen. (Or maybe two listens, this is a six-song EP after all. Rather short.) This band does seem to channel a number of influences in their music. Twins Paul and David Alexander, guitarist Jason Hoddinott and drummer Dave Joyce seem to give every song its own voice; a kind of stylistic sampler if you will. The first cut, “Under Black Lights”, is pure, ready for Top 40 rock, with its rock steady beat and four-part harmony. Track two is where some of the channeling begins to queue as I thought I heard a bit of 80s U2 twang in the chords of “Pilot”. “Free” had a bit of Bryan Adams' “On a Day Like Today” in the guitar chords; more melodic, more mellow. The final three are more in the alternative vein, but it was too late-for I was now hooked on Boswalos.
