Don’t be fooled by the obscenely bizarre band name, or the inside picture of the band lined up against a metal prison-like fence, Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies are really a nice bunch of lads from the wrong side of the Nashville tracks. While everyone was all Grand Ol’ Opry in Nashville, the Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies had their musical ear to the Collective Soul ground. What SCW has evolved into, is a morphing of classic hard rock roots with a little alternative and blues thrown in for good measure.
Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies are complex in sound and bring forward a small track list considering Ten Miles High is their fifth album. They come across as the mavericks of Nashville, both rebelling and tipping their hats at the place they call home. The songs are rich with a raw quality and belting guitar playing. Lead vocals are strong and hoarse, like they are playing after a long night out of partying.
Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies has the right image and sound to go with it, but I wonder how they are different than many other great bar acts? What do they add to the texture of their musical landscape? SCW has formidable talent, undoubtedly, I’m just unsure as to whether that is enough.
