Been smacked with politics lately? Why not have it while you listen to music? This Mamas and Papas band setup, two men and two women, has overtly taken politics and injected it into their indie pop sound. You might resist (“How dare they!”), but if you listen long enough you just might enjoy this lyrically witty repartee of musical persuasion.
The website (www.republicofsafety.ca) is an outline of the Republic of Safety setup as a nation-state of its very own; the flag being a ‘fasten your seat belts’ sign. Meandering through the well thought out ideas of the Republic of Safety is a delight in itself. Read about the country politics, or lack thereof, the language being universal of course and the population being potentially infinite.
Sadly the musical inspiration does not live up to the idealism so carefully executed on their mission statement. Mostly feeling yelled at by the end of this EP, you wonder if some of this Republic has a dictatorship backbone, telling you what to believe as opposed to lulling you into believing it, like any other decent politician would. The ideals are great, and progressive, but the music has been patched and glued together, making The Republic Of Safety a country without unique music.
