You must choose your influences, but it's a challenge living up to them. Chuck Page, from Toronto, credits his influences with being some of the best rock guitarists from the late 60s early 70s: Jeff Beck, Hendrix, Clapton. Page is Rockin' It Out with his first solo project. That means Page is sole producer, sole vocalist, and sole instrumentalist. He clearly favours the electric guitar, and his consistent and alluring voice remains at the foreground of the album. But the dense guitar work, and the synthetic drum tracks undermine his potential as a live performer. Blues rock is meant to be played live, and a recording should capture the raw smell of beer and sweat. A solo effort like this is almost guaranteed to falter—save for one track. Chuck Page reveals his “soul” capacity in an authentic blues cover of Bo Diddley's “Before You Accuse Me.” Keep on rockin' Chuck.
