I took a year of Spanish in university, so I can tell you with at least some certainty that the title of the Black Lip’s latest, Los Valientes Del Mundo Nuevo, means “brave new world” or “the brave of the new world”. . .or something close to that. This is beside the point. What’s important is that this is a live album, recorded at a show these guys did in Tijuana, Mexico. And if you know Tijuana, then I shouldn’t have to say much more. The Black Lips are Cole, Jared, Ian, and Joe – four guys from Atlanta, Georgia. I wouldn’t compare them to the Beatles, but I can’t help but hear something of the fab four on “Boomerang”. Maybe that’s just to say that there is some musicality to what seems to be a glorious liquor-fueled punk rock rampage. On “Sea of Blasphemy” you can actually hear one of the guys getting pulled into a bit of a bar brawl mid-song; and if hearing it’s not enough, you can watch some corresponding video on theirSpace: www.myspace.com/theblacklips. Let’s just say it gets messy. (There’s also a video documenting their search for authentic moonshine, that’s equally enjoyable - and quite informative.)
