If you are always looking down at the ground walking along with hands in your pockets, you will never see the beautiful blue sky. Just look up! Declan de Barra is a Neil Young sounding prodigy. Lyrics deep in the throes of sadness, the bareness of the instrumentation gives way to Declan's hefty yet talented vocals. Reminiscent of Leonard Cohen, Declan projects himself as a man deep in despair as one would who is sapped of energy if oppressed for too long. A mix of Celtic and Native American sounds ripple throughout the project.
From Ireland, Declan De Barra has been working since he was 18. He broke onto the scene with his first band, NIL, on Roadrunner records. His talents include vocals, electric and acoustic guitar, and percussion.
Deliberately contemplative, Declan ponders and reflects upon sorrowful themes. If you are in a happy mood I would not recommend this CD. Declan makes Robert Smith look like he is on happy pills. Amidst the sadness though, there seems to be an artist who is deeply melancholy deliberately reasoning
ruminative and cogitating.
Declan reminds me of a painter or a miner whose cavernous experience has oppressed him because he chooses only to see the dark. Lyrically speaking, his work is poetically driven. Much like Neil Young minus the pop, leaning more towards the ledge of Leonard Cohen. Here's hoping that he finds some happiness. North of the horizon is where I hope to find Declan's journey taking him.
