We've traveled to four different continents, five different countries, seven different studios, and many more fucked up places inside ourselves during the making of this recording.”
-Thirty Seconds to Mars
There was a time when music videos co-existed with songs as visual additions. But Thirty Seconds to Mars have built a reputation on their out-of-this-planet music videos. The band was created by Hollywood-man, song-writer, guitarist and lead vocalist Jared Leto, with his drummer brother, Shannon in 1998. The release of their second, and latest album A Beautiful Lie, in August 16, 2005, includes dazzling bandmates Tomo Milicevic on bass, and Matt Watcher on keyboard and bass (who has recently taken a personal break).
Musically speaking, their latest album is simply a series of catchy hooks and riffs. Jared's alluring breathy whisper launched into a powerfully controlled scream is anchored in a standard, pop-alternative sound that is guaranteed to temporarily succeed on the face of pop culture. The album acts as a mere soundtrack for its Hollywood-ized short-films, called music videos.
The video From Yesterday, that was filmed in China, depicted the band as gift to a young Emperor. The deep, synchronized, echoed beats powerfully matched by the movements of these musician-actors are chillingly delicious. The dark ambiance of the majority of their videos including The Kill ( inspired by Stanley Kubrick's The Shining), are a feast for the eyes and a hollow soul.
Thirty Seconds To Mars, is a trendy package of self-centered chaos, that lacks emotional depth and engagement. They have, however, wisely and influentially used visual “sensation” to stand out in the overpopulated category of pop-alternative.
