Percussion.
The Spartans knew all sorts of clangs and crashes.
Notably when they were produced by swords of an enemy against the width and dense metal of their shields.
The mountain passageway protected by the Spartans was as tight a spot to maneuver as any advancing warrior could imagine. The percussion of shields twang as swords and arrows made their striking thrust. The advancing epic 300 score by Tyler Bates is legendary in its construction and its delivery as any piercing arrow or the drawing percussion of swords. Yet the instrumentation is where this successful battle of song rages coupled with the cinematic experience.
Thematic choir processions and desperately resounding voices amidst energetic guitar lends to the fantastic visual effects. As I listened to the scores it brought back the intensity of the cinematic experience. The compilation lends itself to haunting moments leading up to the scene that sets the tone as the desperation of the Spartans and their strength of character dispense of the messengers of Persia. One can only imagine present day what sounds they heard as they battled for their very existence. The scores by Tyler Bates definitely frames the bravery of the final battle of their lives. No doubt the last sounds they heard on the battle field were harsh: Percussion.
