he title track on The Last Town Chorus’s Wire Waltz gets this album off to a pretty slow start. I didn’t warm quickly to the overall solemnity of songs like “You” and “It’s Not Over”, but that’s often the sign of a good slow burn to come. I am happy to report that Chorus leader Megan Hickey does David Bowie justice with her rendition of Modern Love—which was featured on Season Two, Episode 20 of hit-making catalyst Grey’s Anatomy. In fact, this version doesn’t just suffice, it’s quite beautiful. If you’re looking for something to give you a little get-up-and-go, Wire Waltz is not your best bet. Hickey’s conversational yet honeyed tone and pensive lyrics are more suited to laid-back situations and environments. And the dizzying slide of her lap steel will make your eyes want to roll back into a dream-ridden afternoon nap.
The Last Town Chorus is Megan Hickey on lap steel and vocals, Mark Fredericks and Alan Bezozi on percussion, Ken Heitmeuller on bass, Joe McGinty on organ and piano, Maxim Moston on violin, and Pete Galub on guitar.
