Whether you’re a honky-tonk fan or not, the beat and rhythms of these emotive and high-energy tracks will rope just about anyone in. The Schomberg Fair’s Gospel is just like the uplifting message would suggest – a collection of uplifting songs that preach the stories of the downtrodden. Inspired by lead singer Matt Bahen’s experiences as an outreach worker, these 11 tracks overflow with heart, while at the same time able to evoke the toe-tapping passion of authentic ole’ bluegrass.

Considering the nature of their sound, some find it hard to believe that this trio has its roots in Toronto. Don’t let Bahen’s stony, drawling voice fool you. These fellas didn’t just spring up out of some dusty mid-western dustbowl, but they sure as heck play like they do. Bahen plays the guitar, harmonica, and banjo, while Nathan Sidon provides backing vocals and strums the stand-up bass, leaving drummer Pete Garthside to keep the beat and harmonize the backing vocals.

Gospel is a good mix of upbeat fun and slow-tempo introspection. The baritone voice on this album is appropriate for the genre (particularly in “Trouble Will Soon Be Over), but it can become a bit too over-the-top during some tracks. There are times when I almost expect him to start belting out a chorus of “You’re a mean one, Mister Grinch ...”

Due to their reputation for playing excellent live gigs, and having already opened for big-name acts like Handsome Furs and Jim Cuddy, The Schomberg Fair have definitely made their mark. Their distinctive sound and meaningful lyrics are sure to make an impression on the mind of anyone who has the good fortune of coming across them.
