Bazerk has a strong concept for his album I Heard Y’All Like Violence: The Rage Album, which is clearly stated and then formulated within the fourteen tracks. The website for Bazerk states their sound is supposed to be “where hip-hop meets heavy metal,” but I’m not entirely convinced. I try not to give too much criticism without a follow up of constructive response, but I found myself grasping at straws while listening to Bazerk. They sound like Public Enemy on a bad day, a really bad day. . .when Public Enemy is in their fifties.
Simply put, hip hop already met rock, and we called it “Walk This Way” with Run DMC and Aerosmith singing in the 1986 classic! A full twenty one years later and we haven’t evolved much if Bazerk is all we have left of this blending of styles.
The collection has a strong message, but is weighted down with disorganized music. It felt chaotic. And I think a certain amount of chaos should emerge out of both Hip Hop and Heavy Metal, but it also revealed a high level of unintended disorganization. Where are the heavy metal repetitive riffs and the catchy lyrics of Hip Hop in this album? It sounds a lot like someone trying to shout out rap in heavy metal fashion.
I think when Hip Hop and Heavy Metal blend they can make great music, but I also suspect that Bazerk will not be at the forefront of this revolution.
