Spinnerette is a fairly new alternative rock band currently consisting of some brilliant musicians including Brody Dalle and Tony Bevilacqua (formally of the Distillers) also Jack Irons (formally of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam and Eleven) and Alain Johannes who has also played in Queens of the Stone Age and Eleven. I say “currently consisting of,” because as stated on Wikipedia, Dalle actually stated in an interview that there will be a different line-up when she tours the album.
“Spinnerette isn’t a band” she blatantly put it, “it’s me and whichever musicians I want to work with at the time.” This being said, the current touring band is obviously Dalle as front woman doing vocals and guitar, Bevilacqua and Bryan Tulao on guitar, Vincent Hidalgo on bass and Dave Hidalgo Jr. on drums.
The band first started out in 2007 but their first record which was just released this past June and there’ll be many more to come I’m sure. Spinnerette hit US charts at a peak position of number 20 and the two popular singles “Ghetto Love” and “Sex Bomb” which are still played all the time on the radio, and I don’t see the hits ceasing to come any time soon.
This album is a brilliant chick rock and roll album that can be compared to Metric or even Hole in parts. With punk styles that have been fine tuned to fit her raspy and hard vocals, Spinnerette is a much better fit for Dalle compared to her previous band, the Distillers. She has defiantly found her voice and sense of rock and does not fall short of giving her heart to her music in this band.
The lyrics on this album are defiantly definitive of a sex drugs and rock and roll connotation and Dalle fits the part to a tee. Her vocals hook in the listener, and make you want to learn the lyrics and each song has a hook that gives that “I-want-to-hear-it-again” vibe. The only part of the album I didn’t like was the hidden song; hidden songs are usually the best on the album or at least experimental and different. The hidden song on this album didn’t strike me as amazing in any way.
If you are a fan of Metric, Hole or even the 1991 band, Luscious Jackson, this is one I highly recommend for your collection.
