Little Boots, otherwise known as Victoria Christina Hesketh, brings us her sparkling North American EP Illuminations. This EP precedes a North American tour of five gigs and some of the songs are compiled from the UK album Hands, which peaked at number 5 on the charts. From You Tube desktop, to top of the stage and charts top, it’s a girl’s night out all around.
The hit lead single “New in Town” is used in the upcoming movie Jennifer’s Body and when one considers it as background getting ready for a night of clubbing and high heeled boots wearing practice, it makes sense. The real clubber, “Stuck on Repeat,” is light beats for sleeveless listening only. It has just enough attitude and genre mix to be a Top 20 tune, repeating three lines over and over again it is catchy, dreamy, and synth dance the night away gold. Critics praised “Not Now,” which is only on this North American edition and “Magical” is ring my bell lovely for riding a vespa or cruising in a limo, but not in a truck, dominated by Little Boots’ clear and amp wrapped in silk voice.
A consistent album throughout, it’s sure to garner club and dance raves for the near twiggy Brit poster-girl, Little Boots. But it’s hardly Caligula -little boot in Latin -party music or even as pumping raunchy as Lady Gaga or other electro girls. A little too sweet for some, the “brilliant Brit” who has the image of arranging it all herself on a Yamaha tenori-on, she needs the stilettos but doesn’t need to go where the rough Britney dominatrix is. Just damned nice is “Love Kills,” a cover of the cry happy Freddie Mercury song.
Well produced by Greg Kurstin, she has a great voice to move beyond this poppy stuff and we should look forward to it, but this is a complete and pleasant dance compilation just as it is. Unstuck on repeat, all ages compatible, clubby and cute, easily reworked into rave extensions and not just for a girl’s night out having fun.
