Greg Wood has the right voice for the genre. He’s coarse and throaty with just the slightest hint of a carnal growl. The enthusiasm is there. The influence of all that was popular in 90s rock is more than apparent; Wood himself lists Eddie Vedder, Kurt Cobain, and Chris Cornell as inspirations. The music, however, is thin and has been done to death. For the most part, the album is nothing special.
Trying to be a jack-of-all-trades rock artist isn’t going to work for Wood in the long run. He jumps from soft, blues rock to alt-rock to post-grunge and it just doesn’t sound right. Then there’s “I Want A Girl”, a track so out of place, it’s jarring. Wood needs to choose which musical persona is best for him and work on honing that in the studio.
While the majority of the tracks fall deep into cliché territory, the lighter and more contemporary songs “Drift Away” and “Wake Up” resonate. Wood seems to get a grip on the real potential of his abilities here. Of all the songs, these two gems seem the most genuine, passionate, and creative.
Wood definitely gets points for composing the music and lyrics for this album. That’s no easy feat. Considering that this is his debut, he should be proud. While his sincerity and drive shines through in ambitious rhythms and heartfelt lyrics, it is obvious that Wood still has a long way to go.
