Released this past April, Camera Obscura has come out with yet another brilliant album; their fourth, and in my opinion, their best album yet. My Maudlin Career is also the title track and it ends with a sentence that brings the brilliance of the song writing abilities in this band to the surface… “This maudlin career must come to an end/I don’t want to be sad again.”
Campbell has a definitive way with words that can’t be compared to anything. She knows how to tell a story and make you understand it and sometimes sympathize with whatever she was feeling when she wrote it. The vocals of gentle and fresh, clear sounding Traceyanne Campbell are mixed in with the beautiful and gentle sounding instrumentals of Carey Lander, Kenny McKeeve, Gavin Dunbar, Lee Thomson, and Carey Lander.
The entire album gives has a wide variety of poppy sounding songs French Navy, The Sweetest Thing, Swans, and mixes it up with some slower and mellower tracks such as You Told a Lie, Away with Murder, James and so on. Each track has a unique sounding tune, and the clarity in lyrics makes it easy for the listener to catch onto with ease of mind.
Though it’s been said before, Camera Obscura’s musical sounds can be compared to the likes of Belle and Sebastian. That may be an overused statement, but if you are a fan of the catchy and poppy 50s type musical sound, this is something that you won’t steer wrong picking up for your collection.
