Great beats coupled with poetic lyrics make this album a triumph. It’s another gold star for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, whose track record has been impeccable from the very start. It’s Blitz! is the band’s third studio release following 2006’s Show Your Bones. David Andrew Sitek (member of TV on the Radio) returns yet again to produce the album – his collaboration with the band has so far proven to be consistently successful.
Karen O proves she can still hold steady ground with a strong styled voice that is completely her own. Nick Zinner’s talent on the guitar is slowly rising to match toe-to-toe with the big boys, and Brain Chaser’s skilled drum work takes a backseat to nothing. Quite a trio – they’re fierce, they’re twinkly, and they’re everything in between.
The tracks on this record perfectly complement the varying moods of a youthful and energetic mentality. The first single, “Zero”, is an immediate pop/electronic hit that will surely stir you to take more than a few steps on the dance floor. The soft melancholy sounds of “Skeleton”, “Hysteric” and “Runaway” reveal the band’s subtle, delicate side, proving that they don’t need to be in-your-face-loud to make an impression. And the guitar work in “Dull Life” is classic. The entire album is peppered with excellent drum and bass lines – heart-thumping goodness.
More than ever, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are at home in their unique musical niche. The band is currently touring in the United States and will be off to Europe in mid-June. They will be playing at the Ottawa Bluesfest and the Quebec City Summer Festival in July.
