3OH!3’s Sean Foreman and Nathaniel Motte can really rap. Add on the catchy heavy bass beats and interesting electronic sounds, Want turns out to be quite an album. Foreman and Motte hail from Colorado, hence the reasoning behind the area code 303 being their group name. The duo has preformed at several festivals and have confirmed themselves are definite crowd favourites. The music itself is actually quite good. The music is strong and the lyrics are fierce. Hip-hop fans will love the beats on this album.
An interesting issue jumped into my mind as I listened to this album: I think most people have witnessed the absurdity of SNL’s Andy Samberg and his comedy group, The Lonely Island, whose distinctive brand of hip-hop has been the stuff of comical (and admittedly pretty good musically) send-ups. Their music has been featured on SNL and an album has recently being released by the group. Have Samberg and his fellow Lonely Island members, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, ruined the serious credibility of all white rappers? Maybe not all, but the boys of 3OH!3 sound so similar to what the SNL guys do, it’s hard not to giggle a little. Also, when I think about it, and listen to lyrics, the music on 3OH!3’s Want does seem all very tongue-in-cheek. So, here’s the question: Is it just creative coincidence or are there accusations of imitation on the air?
The nature and style of both groups are more than just similar — mesh them together and they really would sound like the same band. Maybe there’s enough room out there in the satirical hip-hop land for both groups. If not, 3OH!3 is certainly good enough to go head to head with Samberg and The Lonely Island. It would certainly be quite the battle, and a hilarious, head-bopping one at that.
