Released on April 7th last year in the UK and the following day in the United States, Mountain Battles is The Breeders fourth album. This album entered the UK album charts at 46 soon after it was released, though I would have expected it to be much higher on the charts because it stands out as quite original in style.
Mountain Battles has that Pixies vibe, but with a bit of a subtler touch to them, and this is not a surprise considering that half the band are also members of the Pixies. The difference between The Breeders and the Pixies, however, is that The Breeders are much softer poppy sounding rock, whereas the Pixies are more of a punk rock style band. Though the guitar sounds are a bit on the ordinary side, the girls pick up the ordinary sounding guitar sounds with their fun and punchy lyrical style. They can be compared to Tegan and Sarah, or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs so if you like any of the above listed groups, you’ll like the Breeders.
The Breeders are an all American alternative punk rock sounding band which was formed in the late 1980’s by Kim Deal, lead singer of the Pixies along side of Throwing Muses’ singer Tanya Donelly. Over the years the band has gone through some changes and currently they consist of Kim Deal on lead vocals and guitar, her twin sister Kelley Deal on guitar and backup vocals, Jose Medeles on drums and percussion, Mando Lopez on bass guitar and Cheryl Lyndsey on guitar. Deal has always been a sole member of the group and is the one member who holds the band together.
