Released last year, this small girl who dwells in the big city of Toronto, Lights, or known by her friends as Tawgs Salter, wrote and produced most of this album in her own bedroom. With a computer and a couple synthesizers, Salter’s soul is driven by music and music is where she gets her energy. The music, simply put, is poppy and fun. The use of simple synthesizers mixed up with her very girly and simple vocals, she has a way of grabbing the audience attention with her pop inspired sounds. Though the one thing that I noticed about this album is that when it is played on a computer the annoying reading of the CD is oddly loud and does not seem to stop, while when played on a CD player it sounds fine. Lights won the Juno for this one, and it is absolutely no surprise considering the quality is impeccable in comparison to a lot of solo independent artists’ albums that I have heard. She really knows how to attract an audiences attention with her girly and fun up beat music.
Salter says, that music has always been her crutch her drug and her vice for her entire life and she loves to make people move to make people happy and to light up a room with her upbeat lyrics and happy go lucky pop music. Having grown up in the big city but home schooled, this girl has found her way into the music scene with no problem at all. She has already had a few videos on Much Music and is not stopping there.
She does everything herself including directing her videos and the artwork on the album. She is a girl of many talents and wants to share her talent with the world. This six track EP is her first of what I hope will be many and is something that stands out in my collection with its bright colours and fun danceable lyrics.
