It’s sad and contemplative or warm and fuzzy, but either way, mediocre. None of the tracks on Tracy Millar’s second album, I’m Not That Girl Anymore, are remarkable. This is quite typical of today’s contemporary country music — still holding the basic musical roots of country, but lacking the power of raw emotion the old-time songs had. You could call this style ‘bubblegum country’: the kind of music that’s already bit too sweet right off the bat, but becomes flavourless rather quickly.
Any one of these songs would fit well in one of those romantic-comedy montages– you know, that collection of scenes that display one of two crucial point in film: (a) the romantic leads walking around their apartments and/or the cold streets as they lament their dejected, boring lives while they think about being in love that one guy/gal they recently met but can’t quite get together with; or (b) the ending scenes where the couple is finally together and really enjoying life. I can just picture the title track being played in the background of some Diane Lane-type actress throwing out her old clothes, doing up her hair and make-up, and trying on some outfits from her new, I-am-woman-hear-me-roar-reaffirming wardrobe.
To be fair, there is a redeeming point or two to mention. Tracy Millar’s voice is very nice, lovely even — her sound is very smooth and very classic, she’s certainly in the right genre. Her style has been described as very traditional, which is true; the music itself is very naturally simple, with not much more than the soft sounds of the typical guitar, drum, fiddle, and piano. The last track, “I Will Not Be Broken”, is, by far, the most honest and revealing song on the album. Perhaps it should have been her launching point, not her ending.
