Dig Out Your Soul, Oasis’s seventh record, is typical of a band that will never entertain the idea of experimentation. Their style is unflinchingly consistent.
“The Shock Of The Lightning”, the first single, is one of those songs that gets more and more catchy each time you hear it. It is quintessential Oasis, in all senses; you can just see the infamous front man, body bent in front of the microphone, head tilted up, the words falling out of his side-stretched mouth. The rest of the tracks incite the same imagery to the point where it’s almost a cliché for these rockers.
But, is it boring? Surprisingly, no. Oasis may have been settled in one spot musically for some time now, but it has proven to be a good place from them. This sound, which has always been heavily guitar-focused, and their dynamic as a band have worked very well for them. Liam’s the singer, Noel’s the writer, and on occasion, they’ll switch. Gem Archer and Andy Bell are great musicians in their own right who stand quietly in the background. They don’t want to change, and I doubt their fans want that either.
One song that sets apart from the rest is “(Get Off Your) High Horse Lady”, a slow, very old-school track that relies on a simple and steady drum beat. While this track is one of the more memorable pieces on the album, it is of more greater or lesser quality than the rest of the songs, just a little bit different.
Dig Out Your Soul is pure, uncomplicated rock. Plain and simple Oasis. Why mess with success, right?
