This group of three is a bit on the odd side when it comes to musical background. They play with music in a way that the listener least expects, taking inspiration from pop, rock and roll, funk, and even reggae. They make it their own.
qr5 released Pharmakon in 2006, giving the world 10 beautifully eclectic and engaging songs. They’re stories that are brought to life in the music with string and horn arrangements, angelic instrumentation and vocals, and a game like adventure, this group gives it their all.
The album from start to finish is beautifully done. Vocalist Matthew Maaskant’s lyrics are what give this album its colour, combining his mastered voice with the ambient layered instruments in a way that makes the sound more folky than anything else. Although at a brief 40 minutes, the album defiantly gives the listener a journey that makes you want to know more or hear more. That’s where the upcoming album comes in I suppose! This group knows how to reel in a fan.
Playing live they defiantly know how to entertain a crowd. Though they may be on the softer side of rock, these three know how to draw the attention to the stage with their beautifully put together sounds and notable photographic stage presence.
They opened up for Toronto’s down tempo, trip hop artists, Lal, who are guest performers on the upcoming album, so keep your eyes and ears open for more on that, or check out www.qr5.com.
