Released on April 28, 2008, Portishead is back, breaking the beats and spinning wicked sounds to captivate us like they always have. After a long ten years of no releases Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, Adrian Utley and Geoff Barrow finally have a brilliant new album to be proud of. Third starts off with a man speaking French which persists into edgy drum beats with elliptical enticing melodic guitar sounds that just make you want to move. From there it goes through each song like a rhythm, moving the listener and giving each song a uniqueness that can’t be touched. The artfulness of Portishead is like their trademark, with a mixing of different musical types into a masterpiece. Gibbons blows the listener away with her sultry vocals and captivating lyrics. Although she may sound a bit off pitch this is part of the Portishead experience. They are not meant to be on key with the guitar or musical background, they are meant to send you on a mind boggling journey by taking musical beats, sounds, and electronic edginess until you fall off the cliff. Each song on this CD is like an unknown journey that Gibbons has taken in order to give you the result through her music. The entire album mixes sounds of jazz, electronic, fusion, industrial, pop, funk and rock into what I would call magic. I highly suggest that you turn this one on first in the dark with a candle lit, and just move your body naturally to the music. Don’t let anything stop you, just let the music take you away.
