The Resurrection of Whiskey Foote is a fitting title for the latest from The Hidden Hand. The aura hovering above the record is one of ritual, a gathering of energies to perform some ancient rite. Even the words chanted by Wino and Bruce Falkinbourg have the lyrical quality of a prayer. Coupled with dark imagery of gnarled roots and black seas, the songs become cries for an apocalypse. The dreariness can become wearisome to many listeners, and the repetitive nature of the musical structures can sometimes transform the songs into mundane monuments. Only slightly better than the angst of heavy metal, The Hidden Hand produce scenery wrought with spiritual unrest and nightmarish visions; however, it doesn't avail to much more. There is no quality that outlasts the 40 or so minutes of this CD. All that said though, the music herein is devastatingly refreshing and creates some high energy moments of guitar mania.
